Sunday Service November 17, 2019:
Celebrating True Stories of Indigenous Peoples
Ojibwe author David Treuer writes adamantly, unashamedly, about Indian life rather than Indian death….”because the usual story told about us-or rather, about ‘the Indian’-is one of diminution and death.” Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz and Dina Gilio-Whitaker assert that “On the whole, it can be said that the average US citizen’s knowledge about American Indians is confined to a collection of well-worn myths and half-truths that have Native people either not existing at all or existing in a way that fails to live up to their expectations about who ‘real’ Indians are.” Today we will listen to the testimonies and hear the priorities of Native Americans themselves.
